For Damien Boyer, drones are far more than an emerging technology. They are essential tools transforming coastal safety and rescue operations. As Head of Uncrewed Aviation at Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ), Damien oversees a diverse portfolio that spans training, operations, and compliance. His goal is for SLSQ to deliver industry-leading services to enhance beach safety and beyond.
SLSQ operates under multiple remotely piloted aircraft operator’s certificates (ReOCs) and Damien oversees all operations. Its Training Academy offers courses for recreational and commercial drone pilots, while the Shark Smart Program is a crucial initiative for coastal shark surveillance and water safety, funded by the Department of Primary Industries.
‘We specialise in enabling our clients and staff to operate drones safely and effectively while navigating the complexities of aviation regulations,’ Damien explained.
Drones have had a transformative impact on SLSQ’s operations. By enabling safer, faster, and more cost-effective solutions, they’ve improved efficiency and reduced risk across a range of missions.
‘Tasks such as marine species surveillance, flood monitoring, or search-and-rescue missions are safer and more efficient with drones. These technologies minimise human risk while delivering superior results,’ Damien said.
The organisation’s fleet includes a range of DJI drones, each carefully selected for specific tasks. Smaller drones are used for training and beach operations, while medium-sized models, such as the Fly Cart 30 and T50, handle advanced missions and specialised tasks. Thermal payloads support search-and-rescue scenarios, and drones designed for extended visual line-of-sight (EVLOS) operations enable long-distance missions in challenging environments.
Damien’s passion for uncrewed aviation stems from a deep-rooted interest in aviation and technology. With a fixed-wing commercial pilot’s licence, multi-engine command instrument rating, and extensive experience as a flying instructor, he has built a remarkable aviation career. He has trained commercial pilots, worked in defence force operations, conducted aerial photography, and managed commercial charter services. Alongside his fixed-wing qualifications, Damien holds advanced drone certifications, including multi-rotor and VTOL ratings, and a Cert IV in Training and Assessment.
Reflecting on his transition to uncrewed systems, Damien explains how drones offered him the chance to combine his regulatory expertise with cutting-edge technology. ‘Drones offered an exciting opportunity to combine cutting-edge technology with my extensive aviation regulatory knowledge. Their versatility and ability to improve safety and efficiency made this an ideal progression for my career,’ he said.
